20/01/12 | THE CATALONIA LANGUAGE SECTOR CLUSTER IS BORN
TENESOYA PAWLOWSKY HAS BEEN ELECTED AS ITS FIRST CHAIRWOMAN
THE FIGURES: 250 COMPANIES, €150-MILLION TURNOVER, 1500 DIRECT JOBS
THE TRANSLATION BUSINESS IN EUROPE IS WORTH €8,700 MILLION
Last Friday, 20 January, nine of the Catalan language sector’s foremost companies met at Fundación Digitalent – situated in Barcelona’s state-of-the-art 22@ technology district – to form L’Associació Catalana Clúster de les Indústries de la Llengua (Catalan Cluster Association of Language Industries). The founder members of this new cluster association are CPSL, NOVA TRADUCTORS I INTERPRETS, IDISC INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, INTERTEXT TRADUCCIÓN Y DOCUMENTACIÓN MULTILINGÜE, AUTOMATIC TRANS, BCNNET TRANSLATIONS, LINGUASERVE INTERNACIONALIZACIÓN DE SERVICIOS, CBG INTERNATIONAL CONSULTING AND TRANSLATION and the FUNDACIÓ PRIVADA DIGITALENT.
This Association was conceived as the result of a process of strategic reflection by Catalonia’s language industries promoted by Linguamón and the 22@ Barcelona, initiating in 2010 and culminating in the Strategic Cluster Plan. The process of activating and formally constituting the association to execute the proposed action plan began in late 2011. Though the association has started out from a core of nine companies, it intends to welcome a further 25 associate companies throughout 2012.
There are more than 250 language industry firms in Catalonia, providing more than 1,500 direct jobs and generating turnover of more than €150 million. The sector is made up of numerous segments, including translation and interpreting, localisation, semantics, voice technology, dubbing and subtitling, and content and language teaching. This sector is worth around €8,700 million Europe-wide.
The association’s main objective is to strengthen the language industry by organising activities to improve the competitiveness of its companies and promote development of innovative products and services along with their internationalisation through national and international projects.
Cluster Development, with participation by Marc Papell and Albert Vilardaga, was responsible for the entire process, from drafting the strategic plan to setting up and activating the Association.
The cluster association will help companies to identify interesting projects (new product research and development and shared marketing actions among members); to participate in the cluster’s common activities and projects (market research, specialised training activities, etc); to get to know other companies and cluster centres (networking activities); and to achieve a high profile both in Spain and abroad.
The association’s first conference, held on Friday, 20 January 2011, included its first board meeting, during which there was a presentation of the action to be taken during the first quarter. The work plan includes creating two work groups to organise innovative projects involving digital content and internationalisation of services. Tenesoya Pawlowsky was appointed as chairwoman, Consol Casablanca as vice-chairwoman, Dorotee Oft as treasurer and Pere Grivé as secretary. The other founder board members are Òscar Suau, Ginés Morata, Andros Boix and Joan Carles González. Antoni Mir was appointed to the post of director of institutional and international relations.
Over the coming months there will also be public presentations to sector companies to provide information about the action plan.
