With escort interpreting, it’s essential for the interpreter to be not only completely fluent in the language of the speakers, but also perfectly familiar with the non-verbal language (gestures, greetings) of both cultures. In whispered interpreting, or ‘chuchotage’, the interpreter translates what is being said from a language that most of the people present understand. The speaker and the participants speak normally, without any pauses, and the interpreter translates what is being said in the meeting for the customer, using a quiet voice or whisper. Occasionally, the interpreter also translates the customer’s words for the other people present. For whispered interpreting, the interpreter must be a native speaker of the same language as the customer and have a perfect understanding of the language that the event is being held in. Whispered interpreting is used in meetings, interviews, conferences and, in general, events attended by a speaker and an audience who share the same language, which is different than that spoken by the customer.
