Automated interpreting services

Given that AI is a reality and considering that CPSL is a benchmark in interpreting services, we are currently researching and testing the use of simultaneous machine interpreting in different scenarios. Artificial intelligence technology is constantly being improved and developed, a situation we are fully immersed in and monitoring to determine if automated interpreting can soon become a reliable alternative to human interpreting.

Some of the benefits of automated interpreting include the immediate availability from multilingual machines that interpret in different languages, the efficiency of the process due to no longer having to organize and schedule various interpreters, and the cost-effectiveness of the process, with companies potentially saving significant amounts. This would be particularly beneficial in humanitarian contexts and areas of conflict where budgets are low or non-existent. However, it certainly has its disadvantages, such as the latency of current systems, the inconsistent performance of machine interpretations, and the fact that the solution is less effective if the speakers are non-native. So for now, the use of machine interpreting is being tested, which will allow us to fully understand its accuracy and thoroughly determine its potential impact on confidentiality. We know it’s an opportunity, but we have to experiment with it and assess the variable performance of the system and its time lag, depending on the various language combinations.

How does automated interpreting work?

Step 1. We would handle the necessary arrangements for setting up the machine‑interpreted event, which would take place under the supervision of your dedicated project manager and CPSL’s technical team.

Step 2. The online event would take place using special, dedicated channels, to which participants would have to connect in order to hear the automated interpretation. Depending on the setting and the requirements, it could be possible to both hear the speech in the target language and read it as transcribed text.

Step 3. If the client wishes, a recording of the event could be made, which CPSL would subsequently deliver.

In the very near future, it could be possible to handle several languages at once, thanks to the real-time speech translation performed by cutting-edge machine interpreters.
