Automated interpreting services

Given that AI is a reality and CPSL is a reference company in interpreting services, we are currently researching and testing the use of simultaneous machine interpreting in different scenarios. At present, artificial intelligence technology is constantly being improved and developed and we are following the situation to see if automated interpreting will soon become a reliable alternative to human interpreting.

Some of the benefits of automated interpreting are the immediate availability of multilingual machines performing the interpretation in different languages, the efficiency of the process as it would no longer be necessary to organise the schedules of different interpreters, and the cost-effectiveness of the operation, which could potentially save companies significant amounts of money. This could be particularly beneficial in humanitarian contexts and areas of conflict where budget is low or absent. Of course it has its own disadvantages, like the latency of current systems, the inconsistent performance of machine translating, and the fact that the solution is less effective if speakers are not working in their mother tongue. However, the use of machine interpreting is being trialled right now in order to fully understand its accuracy and thoroughly address its potential impact on confidentiality. We know it’s an opportunity, but we are also evaluating and experimenting the variable performance of the system depending on the language combinations and the time lag.

How does automated interpreting work?

Step 1. We would set up the necessary equipment for the machine interpreted event, which would take place under the supervision of your dedicated project manager and the CPSL technical team.

Step 2. The online event would take place through special dedicated channels, to which participants would connect in order to hear the automated interpretation. Depending on the settings and requirements, it may be possible to both hear the speech in the target language and see it in text as a transcription.

Step 3. If the client requires it, the event would be recorded and sent to them.
